Choosing a Baby Name

Of the the most stressful parts of a perfectly healthy pregnancy is perhaps picking the name. This is something that you are going to be calling a human being for the rest of their lives and will have an influence on the way people treat them, the way that they get jobs and many parents are very nervous about making the right choice.

The first thing to think about is how pronounceable the baby name you are considering is? Do you really want your child to have to explain how to pronounce their name to everybody that they meet throughout their life?

The truth is that no one name can possibly fulfil all of the needs and wants that you have in your mind, so a certain amount of compromise is required. You might want a name that is studious and smarts sounding as well beautiful, but this is not always possible. As parents you want to choose a name that would suit your child whether they turn out to be a rock star, pastry chef of the president of the USA. The truth is that you do not know what your child will turn out like, so try and bare this in mind.

One of the best bits of advice is to think of someone who you really admire who is the same gender as your child and whose qualities you would love your child to have. In doing this, you will probably find that you already have a positive opinion of the name to begin with. The person doesn’t always have to be famous. It could be a childhood friend, teacher or whoever you want.

Another great way to get inspiration for names is buy get a book dedicated to the subject. There are  a huge selection for baby name books out there with thousands of different names to choose from, although many have a lot of stranger names that you will probably not want to consider.

If you are on a budget and do not want to fork out for a book, there are also many online sites that list the most common names for both boys and girls. Take a while to browse a few of these along with your partner and discuss your thoughts.

One of the most important things is to agree with your partner on the name that you choose. Failing to see eye to eye on such an important decision can cause tension and arguments for years to some, so it is important to get it right.
